Local MP for Islington North, Jeremy Corbyn, has given his support to our campaign against “Shark Services”. Jeremy visited UNISON members at London Met last week to discuss proposals put forward by the university to privatize jobs and student support services though the “Shared Services” model. UNISON members lobbied the Board of Governors on Wednesday 4th July against the widely unpopular and untenable ’shared services’ proposals.

Wearing ‘Shark Services’ campaign tee-shirts, staff and students gathered to say ‘BT Go Home’! and ‘Two down, three to go!” UNISON members were uplifted by the recent news that the author of the business case for ‘Shared Services’ at London Met, David Andrews, plus his previous outsourcing company, Xchanging, had pulled out of the bidding process (photos, left, David Hardman)

Some background: In December 2011, the University announced their decision to embark on a ‘Shared Services’ delivery of all support services.

UNISON published our response ‘We are London Met not Easy-Met!, and over one hundred UNISON members met in January, to launch a campaign for Education not Privatisation Our motion against the privatisation of London Met support was passed unanimously: Education, not privatisation – We are London Met not Easy-Met motion.

Since then, both the London Regional Higher Educational committee and National Higher Education conference has passed policy supporting our campaign.

UNISON Branch reps wrote to the Governors outlining our concerns on their shock announcement, and asking for a meeting but we were turned down this basic request. Since then between January and March UNISON reps were in talks with Management that proved to be fruitless. At our AGM on 7th March, we passed policy that mandated our branch take action if talks fail.
