Action short of a strike

As you are aware we are in dispute with the university over the current round of job cuts. We sent an email to the Board of Governors on 2 June requesting a meeting and we are disappointed that we have not yet had a response from the Governors. We understand the Governors have had two positive meetings with the UCU and they have now called off their marking boycott which we hope is a positive sign and a step in the direction of ending their dispute. As support staff we expect to be given the same consideration as the UCU - we will not be treated like second class citizens – so that we may present our case with the aim of ending our dispute.

The universities failure to live up to their commitment to mitigate against compulsory redundancies (we have provided logical, cost neutral alternatives) and the Board of Governors reluctance to meet with us means that we will have no choice other than to escalate our industrial action by initiating action short of strike and will consider further strike action in the very near future.

Action short of a strike – TUESDAY 23 and WEDNESDAY 24 June

Next Tuesday we will be launching action short of strike (working to rule) by asking you to ‘reclaim your lunch hour’ with a FREE Buffet for UNISON members in the Rocket courtyard from 12-2pm. Please spread the word, come and enjoy free lunch and find out more about how you can support our dispute.

The action short of a strike that you should take is:

  1. A ban on overtime working.
  2. Not working outside contracted hours.
  3. Not covering for leave, sickness or training of colleagues.
  4. Not carrying out tasks where the required training has not been provided.
  5. Reading work related e-mails and the intranet during contracted hours only.
  6. Working fully to all procedures including health and safety.
