Advice to UNISON members for UCU strike on Thursday 21 May
UNISON respects the rights of other trade unions to take industrial action.
‘Just say no’ to covering for striking UCU staff
UNISON members in London Met are still being balloted for strike action and action short of strike action (see here – last chance to vote). We are not taking strike action on Thursday 21 May. You are advised that – if you have not already booked leave – you must continue to work as normal on Thursday but only work your normal duties and responsibilities.
UNISON members should not take on any additional responsibilities being given to them directly as a result of the UCU’s industrial action.
Support staff should not be expected to provide cover for exam invigilation, where this would normally be done by academics who are taking action.
In particular, higher-level technicians should only be providing normal cover if they are contracted to do so, where it is timetabled or where it is a part of their normal duties.
Staff should not be moved from the duties they would normally have carried out in order to cover exams or teaching to frustrate the industrial action of colleagues.
Unison Members who are under pressure to cover should contact their UNISON rep for further advice and support. You are advised to keep this email and show it to your line manager if they request you to cover for striking staff.
