London Met UNISON branch have voted for strike action on Wednesday 22nd June.

See the poster below for more details.

Join us on June 22nd to march on the meeting of the Board of Governors and call for them to lift the threat of redundancies at London Met.

70% of courses are being cut, particularly humanities subjects, and widening participation is seriously at risk as higher education slides towards privatization and elitism.

Join the fightback. Assemble at Highbury Fields at 2-3pm. There will be live music, and speakers include Mark Serwotka, General Secretary of PCS, and Denise Beruchi, Assistant National Officer for UNISON Education and Children’s Services. Get more details by clicking on the image below.

The UNISON Summer newsletter is now available. A PDF version can be downloaded by clicking on the image below.

Do you have an idea that could reduce non-staff costs at London Met, and therefore reduce the need for redundancies?

If you do, UNISON would like to know, so we can pass your proposals on to management.

You can let us know your ideas by completing the form at the link below, and then emailing it to unison@londonmet.ac.uk or you can post the form to UNSION Office, City campus, JS3-94 Jewry Street, London EC3N 2EY.

Suggested non-staff savings form

UNISON sent our first 100 post cards this week to the Chair of the Board of Governors – urging him to resolve the dispute with the unions over compulsory redundancies.

The first 100 postcards (see image below) from UNISON to the Chair of the Board of Governors were sent by 1st class post, and between the first 100 staff who filled them in, we had a total combined services of 1,105 years working at London Met University. This is an average of 11 years at London Met per person.

The unions are in dispute over the failure to mitigate against the need for compulsory redundancies. The statutory minimum terms for compulsory redundancies caps the severance pay at £400 per week for every year’s services and the total is capped at 20 years service.

Many staff at London Met have worked for more than 20 years and the vast majority earn more that £400 per week Gross Salary. Malcolm Gillies, VC, has been at London Met for little over one year, Deputy VCs Pete McCaffery and Paul Bowler less than 6 months each.

Want to join our campaign and send a postcard to Clive Jones yourself? Ask a UNISON steward for a postcard, fill in your details and we’ll post one for you.

Not a member of UNISON? You can send a postcard anyway – but think about joining UNISON today, before it’s too late.
