London Met UNISON members pledge to 'March for the Alternative' on 26th March.

On Wednesday 23rd February the branch held its Annual General Meeting. The AGM was well attended and succeeded in updating the membership on the branch’s activities and achievements in the past year and identified priorities for campaigning for the year ahead.

For more photos of the AGM go here.

Reports were given by Branch Chair Max Watson, Branch Secretary Allan Pike, Membership Secretary Susan Lloyd and Treasurer Chris Manna. Daphne Chalk-Birdsall also gave a brief Health and Safety report.

Guest speaker Glyn Jenkins, Head of Pensions at UNISON, updated the branch on the proposed changes to public service pension arrangements. Glyn called on all members to support the current campaign to protect our final salary scheme. Further information on the campaign can be found at www.unison.org.uk/pensions

A London Met student, Mags, also spoke on the recent student occupation of the Finance Department and the need for solidarity between students and union members to oppose future cuts.

A number of new branch committee members were unanimously elected. All changes to officer and steward details can be seen on the Officers and Stewards section of the website.

Four motions were tabled, on the subjects of a London Living Wage, support for the TUC March for the Alternative on 26th March, and opposition to “Faculty-isation” and compulsory redundancies. All were voted on and carried.

The full text of the motions passed, and the various reports and nominations to the branch committee can be seen in the document here.

Thank you to all those who attended this important part of the branch’s democratic decision making process, and to all those who helped organise the meeting and make it a success.

The ConDem government are saying “we are all in this together,” but bankers are enjoying fat cat bonuses while jobs and services are being slashed.

Islington stands to lose £335 million, with each household losing £4,000 per year in vital services.  Services for the elderly, teachers, youth workers, NHS, mental health, post, fire, council, transport, parks, leisure, libraries, voluntary sector and welfare payments are all destined for the chop!

We need to create a storm of protest over the coming weeks and months.  After a successful local demonstration called by the Islington Hands Off Our Public Services coalition on Saturday 5 February and lobby of Islington Council’s budget meeting on Thursday 17 February, there will be the TUC national demonstration on Saturday 26 March.  Make sure your friends, family and workmates join you.
