The revelations that £1m has been paid to LMU senior managers whilst the university struggles to repay its debts to HEFCE have received national press coverage.

The London Evening Standard article can bee seen here.

Our recent recruitment campaign has been a great success, and has seen members of the branch leafleting outside almost every university building over the past few weeks. It has been a very worthwhile exercise, allowing us to speak to colleagues and hear their views on the union and what we should be doing to make it more responsive. We have handed out many membership forms, and gained many signatures to our petition to protect education from cuts.

We have also undertaken a full programme of all-staff lunchtime meetings across the two campuses,  encouraging non-members to attend and tell us their views. These meetings have resulted in several new members signing up, and some useful feedback.

More membership, recruitment and social activities will be taking place, and if you have any views on how your union could be made better, please contact the executive committee at unison@londonmet.ac.uk

An email from the HR department at LMU has revealed that senior managers are paid in the region of £1m in bonuses per year, whilst only £100k is paid in “Merit Awards” to support staff.

Dear Malcolm Gillies,

In an email to all staff you recently asked us to make suggestions on how to make savings at London Met.

We have just been told that you currently spend £1M per year on bonus schemes for senior managers. For us support staff, however, £100K is spent on ‘Merit Awards’.

You recently closed the nursery because you said you couldn’t afford to keep it open. Further cuts are talked about every day.

Do you recognise that such bonuses in the current climate for already well paid managers is unsustainable, unjustifiable and frankly obscene?

Regards,

On behalf of the UNISON Executive Committee
